Where does your money go?

to The Women In Need Fund at Cedar River Clinics

Cedar River Clinics are dedicated to every woman’s reproductive health and freedom to decide her own future. We believe no woman should be forced to bear a child against her will. Every woman should have a choice regardless of her financial situation. The Women In Need Fund makes abortion accessible to women with few financial resources.

An unintended pregnancy can wreck havoc with a woman’s ability to move forward in life. But when she faces double or triple barriers of living in poverty, not speaking the language, or needing to travel long distances to the clinic, it can make the difference between having a choice or not. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned; about one-third, or 1.4 million annually, end in abortion. Among teens, over 75% of pregnancies are unplanned. We believe in the power of women to decide about abortion—free from interference, or coercion, or lack of resources. Reproductive freedom is a basic human right of all women.

Women must have complete information and access to health care to prevent pregnancy, and the option of safe abortion if pregnancy occurs. We believe women know best.

    • Mary Jean came from a strict Catholic family. Although she had been raped, no one in her family supported her decision to have an abortion. When she arrived at the clinic from her home 4 hours away, we found she was too far along for a one-day procedure and she would need to stay overnight. Since it took all her funds to pay for the more advanced procedure, WIN provided for a motel and meal so she would not have to stay in a hostile environment with anti-abortion relatives.
    • Amber was able to get state Medicaid to cover the cost of abortion. She was living in a homeless shelter in Tacoma. When we encouraged her to take the prescribed medication with food, she laughed and said she didn’t have any food or money. The clinic’s health-worker left the room and came back with $15. Amber said it was “a lot of money” and was grateful to be treated with compassion.
    • Alice is on full disability and receives Social Security payments of $450 per month. She has 8 dependents. WIN covered her first-trimester abortion in full.
